Description

Wow, can't believe I haven't posted anything in six months. Not that I haven't been doing anything, although admittedly I haven't done much of note (i.e. not actually finished anything other than a couple small Iron Hands units).

Anyway, the new Space Marine codex is proving pretty cool. I did a huge look at it over at my blog (allerka.blogspot.com/2013/09/4…, and I've been having some good times with my Iron Hands. But I've been feeling nostalgic for my Lords of Oblivion. Although the Dark Angels book is probably a better thematic fit for my main 3rd Company army, the Space Marine book still offers a number of tempting options. Chapter Masters are finally good enough to be worth taking. The Honor Guard also got buffed quite a bit. Although I've been using primarily Terminators for Allerka's retinue over the years when he does actually take to the field, the more I studied the rules for the Honor Guard, the more I liked what I saw. For 180 points, you can get five guys with two Relic Blades, a Chapter Standard, and the Champion, which gives you 15 power weapon attacks and eight Relic Blade attacks on the charge, and everyone's got a 2+ armor save to soak up damage. Add in a Chapter Master with the right equipment and that's another 5 or 6 attacks on the charge with something that's probably pretty painful as well.

So, anyway, I decided to go ahead and try to build me some Honor Guard. Of course, I have to make them pretty blinged out. Here's the first three I built. Top guy has a power weapon, the lower two have relic blades. The bitz are mostly from the new Sternguard Veterans kit, but there's some random stuff from Grey Knights, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and I think even the Scouts mixed in. Also the cloaks are from Anvil Industries (had some extras lying around after making my Clan-Commander with one). Took a couple hours for each model to figure everything out, get it positioned, make conversions where necessary (like changing the bolters to be held by the left hand), etc. For the other two guys, the Standard Bearer and the Champion, I'm gonna grab the Mk IV Command kit from Forge World. Or at least when I can spare the funds, heh.

Can't wait to try these guys on the field.
